The day I met Oscar de la Renta

…was a day I never thought would exist. In fact, I didn’t even know this morning that I would meet the legendary designer.

Long story short, there was a lot of running. Through hallways, puddles, subways and elevators- my friend and I made it to be the last ones in line to meet the man himself.

I wish I had photos of the event to show you, but my little Canon was nesting comfortably in her bag the entire day. HOW I REGRET NOT KNOWING ABOUT THIS SOONER so I could’ve a) actually bothered with dressing up (instead of a schoolgirl jeans-and-high-tops ensemble when everyone else wore a little black dress and glossy pumps) b) brought my camera (so my friend and I wouldn’t have to reply on a cellphone camera) and c) wouldn’t have disappeared out of nowhere to storm downtown.

Anyhoo, here are the goodies I brought home:

Yes, that is an autograph by Oscar de la Renta.

I remember when Mr. de la Renta slowly signed his name on the card. It was odd because he signed it vertically, from the “O” up- the first time I saw anybody signing their name in such a way. Darn, now I wish I said something more when I was in the designer’s presence. All I said was “Hi” when I arrived at his glass table and “Thank you, sir” when I left, and he said nothing- just looked at me with measuring eyes.

I also received a vial of his new “Live in Love” fragrance (which immediately smelled of a freshly squeezed orange, then of flowers and smoky spices, and ending in an elegant, feminine warmth) which he was launching today. “Live in Love” captures sunny spring days and romantic summer nights perfectly.

P.S. And I saw Jeanne Beker, the host of Fashion Television.

Sometimes, you just have to be spontaneous.
