Lake Erie

Another weekend trip! This time, driving southwest for two hours landed me at Lake Erie. Hopefully, I can visit all of the Great Lakes one day! Bucket list?

First stop- the abandoned Erie Beach. The now deserted and crumbling park was once a million dollar amusement park in the 1920′s. The rocks you see below are actually slabs of concrete- what was once a wide road, trodden by thousands of visitors from the Niagara region and Buffalo, New York (just across the lake).

On the wooden boardwalk, still standing from it’s days of glory, were information placards with photos of days past.

This is how busy the beach once was!

This is the beach today. Note the concrete swimming area dividers in the above. Their remains are slowly eroding in the waters of the photo below.

Next stop- you guess! Here’s a clue.

Meteors? Models of the rocky planets? Nope, nada, null. Need another clue?

Take in dudes dressed as British soldiers sitting by the trees, WAR MEMORIAL at the left background and 1810′s clothing. Forgot your grade eight Canadian history already? It’s Old Fort Erie! (Exclamation mark for the history buffs.) What you saw in the first photo were actually cannonballs from the War of 1812. And you thought I went to an astronomy museum…

I then proceeded to learn about how to kill others efficiently without killing yourself in the early 19th century while simultaneously touring a perfect, pre-arranged movie set (complete with actors in costume!). (I’m sorry. I can’t help it. My English teachers scold me for run on sentences.)

It was fun and depressing at the same time. You can’t get too jolly when you’re walking on “Canada’s bloodiest battlefield”.

Next, I visited a little residential park on the side of the road facing the US.

No seriously, that’s how close you get to the US.

Makes you wonder how illegal immigrants are caught when you can basically swim to the opposite nation’s shore…

Thankfully, our neighbourly waters weren’t too polluted- swarms of blue fish swam in shallow waters.

I ended my day back at my campsite (I was camping by Niagara Falls) where a meal of coal- grilled BBQ chicken ensued. Yes, I was dabbling in vegetarianism last July but my doctor recommended to quit until I stopped growing. That looks funny written on the screen. Anyways, SALIVATE:
